The image is not uploaded: your browser reads the file itself, so even a private photo never leaves your device. Only if it contains a location does the map load the tiles for that area from OpenStreetMap.
What is read
EXIF with camera, lens, exposure and capture time, GPS coordinates, IPTC and XMP details such as title, author or copyright, and the colour profile. JPEG, PNG, TIFF and HEIC can be read. Many messengers and social networks remove this data when sending, and then the list stays almost empty.
